Education
The Museum offers Classroom and on-site programs.

As part of our mission to educate the public about Loudoun’s history, the Museum offers a variety of interesting and inspiring programs for children and adults.

Children’s Programs: All of the museum’s programs for public, private and home-schooled students are lively interpretations of Loudoun County’s unique past. When creating the programs, the museum staff uses primary sources to make history come alive and enhance Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements.

Each program features hands-on object exploration, graphics, maps, images, demonstrations, costumes and activities. Our educators will adapt each program to the students’ ages, abilities and interests. For the 2007-2008 school year, the museum offers programs on John Janney’s Virginia (PreK to 3rd grade), the Civil War, French and Indian War, World War II, and African American history (4th through 8th grades).

We require reservations for all children’s programs. Please call the museum at 703.777.7427 or e-mail education@loudounmuseum.org to learn more.

Guided Museum Visits. Each year, the museum’s exhibitions and artifacts illustrate different major themes in Loudoun and Virginia’s history. A tour of the museum’s current exhibits, followed by a walking tour of historic Leesburg, is an excellent way to introduce students to Loudoun County’s history. The walking tour of Leesburg touches on topics such as African-American history, the Civil War in Leesburg, and colonial life in Loudoun during the American Revolution. Guided museum visits are $5.00 per student.

Outreach Program. Museum staff and volunteers come into the classroom to deliver these one-hour on-site presentations. Topics include those mentioned above, and the museum provides pre- and post-presentation activities for the class. With sufficient notice, the museum can tailor programs and activities to fit the teacher’s classroom needs. Outreach programs are free of charge for Loudoun County public schools; $50.00 per class/program for others.
Girl Scout Programs. The museum offers several programs to fulfill Brownie Try It, Junior Badge, and Senior Interest Project requirements. All supplies are included (except the badges). Programs last an hour and a half, and can be scheduled Monday through Friday and some Saturdays. $5.00 per scout, leaders are free, with $5.00 fee for additional children or siblings.
